It’s been said that Glencairn is the closest you’ll come to Scotland without crossing the Atlantic. From the moment you pass the stone gates and wind your way between rock fences to the majestic multi-turreted clubhouse, you will feel like you just arrived at a Scottish links. Designed by Thomas McBroom, Glencairn’s 27 links-style holes are punctuated by steep pot bunkers and framed by fescue that waves menacingly in the ever-present wind that buffets the Halton Hills just west of Toronto. Burns (narrow meandering streams) cut through the heaving landscape of the Niagara Escarpment. You’ll have to be creative on the tight lies that surround the mammoth undulating greens. Afterwards, luxuriate in the castle-like clubhouse modeled after Scotland’s Muirfield, featuring brilliant photographs from three decades of Open Championship golf taken by award-winning photographer Doug Ball. Grab an ale in a cozy corner of the magnificently appointed Friar Pub or end your work week with a Friday night on the patio listening to one of the live bands that offer some sounds of the summer to savour with your delectable meal. The magnificent clubhouse is also an idyllic spot for hosting weddings, banquets or meetings. Make the short jaunt to Glencairn, transport yourself to Scotland, and save the plane fare.
It seems we can't find what you're looking for.
Many important milestones have been celebrated here at the Schoolhouse through the years. A beautiful ochre brick building, designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, this gem of early Toronto’s architecture provides a comfortable atmosphere redolent of a bygone era. There’s simply no other place like it. Collage showing exterior of the Schoolhouse plus various wedding-related images such as bridal couples, the cake and guests enjoying the festivitiesSmall and Large Groups The West Hall (size 48′ x 48′) can accommodate up to 150 guests. The Schoolroom (size 32′ x 34′) and the Salon (size 27′ x 27′) are perfect for a cocktail before dinner. Our facilities may be booked day or evening. However, we recommend booking as far in advance as possible to ensure the date you want. Wedding Ceremonies and Receptions Married couples fondly recall being married in this charming and beautifully restored Victorian Schoolhouse built in 1848. Many couples hold the ceremony in the Schoolroom, have a bar in the Salon and the reception in the West Hall complete with baby grand piano. One of four top-of-the line caterers provides gourmet food, attentive staff and expert attention to detail and our recommended florists can put blooms on every table. Our thoughtful, experienced staff will help you obtain your special occasion permit. There’s no corkage fee. We can suggest DJs or bands, photographers, limousines, wedding cake makers, entertainers, and more. Our party suppliers are some of Toronto’s best and most reputable with rates to accommodate your budget. We’ll make your wedding a day you will cherish forever. Inside and out, the Schoolhouse is ideal for wedding photographs. Daytime photographs taken inside can capture the wedding party against a background of exposed beams and light streaming through the gothic style windows. At night, the exposed beams add textural warmth to the softly lit scene. The old brick Enoch Turner Schoolhouse walls offer an historical backdrop for your outdoor wedding photographs beside the Schoolhouse flowerbeds or in the small park just outside! Consider the Schoolhouse for a reasonably priced wedding and reception. That’s partly because of where we are… outside the expensive downtown core. Then again, we’re a not-for-profit museum without high overheads. Bring your own bar supplies for the caterers to uncork (no corkage fee!) and serve. After the reception, they’ll pack up what’s left for you to take home. While Saturdays have always been the preferred day for weddings, customs are changing as people’s lifestyles change. Now it’s not uncommon to have an evening wedding during the week or on Sunday, saving hundreds of dollars. Whichever you prefer, it’s important to book as far in advance as possible.
The history of the building precedes 1931. Around the turn of the century, the wood frame structure was bricked over and known as the Wildfang/Staebler Block. It housed a piano dealership, farm machinery sales office, and upstairs, the post office and the Tavistock Gazette newspaper office and a photo gallery. In later years the main floor was a car showroom operated by Andrew Baechler. The restaurant lineage begins in 1931, with the opening of “Joe`s Place” under the founder Old Joe Steinman. It began as a lunch counter, tobacco shop and barber shop. In 1946, Joe`s son Clarence “Hap” Steinman, joined his father. They incorporated the bowling lanes that were located at the rear of the restaurant, where the Quehl`s banquet facilities are now located. In 1959, a partnership between Hap and Les Rogers was formed and the name was changed to “Les & Haps”. Les retired in 1972 and in 1974, Hap sold the business to his nephew Joe Steinman and the name returned to “Joe`s Place” and remained until 1981. It was then purchased by Bill Quehl (The name Quehl, is pronounced like the bird Quail). Bill had acquired, what was then, the 40 year old catering business of his grandmother, Ruby. Bill closed down the bowling alley, and used the solid oak lanes to form many of the tables used today at Quehl`s. He renovated the original dinning area of the restaurant, to what you see today. In 1987, Ruth and Steve Cahill, purchased the restaurant and neighboring buildings (formerly Weicker`s butcher shop and the Weicker House. They maintained the Quehl`s name and Steve made extensive renovations to the neighboring buildings and joined them together with the original building. This was done by inclosing the alleyway that ran between the restaurant and the Weicker butcher shop, thus making one large building with a total seating capacity of 250. A partnership was formed in 1993 with the current owners, Cindy and Brian Larsen, until the Cahill`s retired from Quehl`s in 1996. All owners have maintained the small, home town quality of Quehl`s. Each of the several dining areas of the restaurant are named according to previous owners. The “Old Joe`s Room” the “Ruby Quehl Room” the “Weicker Room” and the “Les & Hap`s Room” each are unique and offer the flavor of a bygone era. The alley way that is now the main entrance to Quehl`s, once led to the rear barns for Weickers butcher shop, back at the turn of the century. As the horse drawn wagons would round the corner to the barn, the hub of the wheels would scrape the bricks, and the grooves are visible to this day. As well as a restaurant, Quehl`s has become somewhat of a museum, with artifacts from the Tavistock area, dating back more that a century. The catering side of Quehl`s is heading into it`s 60th year, with many of the original recipes still in use. Catering events range in size from 50 people to an event Quehl`s catered for 5,500 people. Within the past 10 years, Quehl`s has served on average 150,000 meals each year. Quehl`s has become the destination for many motor coach tours, prior to and returning from, the Stratford Festival, being only 20 minutes from the Theatre. We have abundant facilities to accommodate a tour. We are an Eat Smart restaurant, Smoke Free and Allergy conscious. Quehl`s uses traditionally raised meats and organic products, supplied by local producers. All the owners have meticulously recorded the changes made to the operations over the years. The walls of the restaurant are adorned with pictures of the restaurant and other buildings of Tavistock that make for interesting comparisons of the past and present. Other reminders of past eras, particularly in the railway motif, and now models of vintage cars, make a visit to the restaurant a worthwhile experience. Your Hosts, Cindy and Brian Larsen.

Grosvenor Lodge is a city owned, self sustaining historic estate. It is a co-operative community endeavour promoting heritage and environmental activities and organizations in the London area. "For over 120 years, Grosvenor Lodge, which has been described as an outstanding example of ""Tudor Gothic"", was home to one of London's pioneer families. Samuel and Anne Peters left their native Devon to come to Canada in 1835. His training as a civil engineer and land surveyor seemed to fit with the requirements of the new land. His first employment was with the Canada Land Company in Goderich. However, his wife and family preferred London and there was plenty of work for a surveyor in the rapidly growing community. They bought 500 acres of land from George Goodhue and had their nephew design the house. The result was a Victorian residence in the manner of a Tudor country home. There are paired gable finials and paired gable panels, one with the date stone and the other with Samuel Peters monogram. Emphasized quoins toped by corbels mark the corners. Work on the house began in 1853 and the family moved in a year later. The imposing entrance has Gothic heads to sidelights and door and recessed spandrels emphasize the Gothic heads with rectangular frames. Sidelights and transom have leaded glass with decorative treatment and monograms. The door and side panels are linen fold panels and the alignment of the paneling indicates much attention to detail. The stained glass window over the front door has the initials S and A, for Samuel and Anne, entwined in a Victorian love knot. Grosvenor Lodge remained in the Peters family for 3 generations. This extensive country estate was also a working farm, refined into a gentleman's farm under the stewardship of son John who inherited the property. John was a Justice of the Peace and raised thoroughbred horses and greyhounds on the farm. Leila Gertrude Peters, John's daughter, was only 25 years old when she inherited the home in 19115 and a gracious, yet industrious, family life continued through the twentieth century. She raised shorthorn cattle, made her own butter and ran the farm business from the kitchen. She married James Paul Dunn and had a son. William Lawrie Dunn. Leila Peters Dunn lived in the house until her death in 1974. Two years before she died, Leila sold the property to the University of Western Ontario under the condition that it be preserved as an historic site. The Lodge was designated as a Heritage property in 1972. The London Public Library Board took over and in 1981 the Lodge opened as the Lawson Museum and History Centre. Today the Lodge is the London Regional Resource Centre for HERITAGE and ENVIRONMENT. The Lodge is owned by the city of London and since 1992 has been managed by Heritage London Foundation. "

Caledon Woods is a scenic, inspiring walk in the pastoral hills and valleys of the Caledon countryside just north of Toronto. Opened in 2003, Caledon Woods replaced the 27-hole Bolton Golf Club, so it delivers modern features and top conditions in the mature surroundings of a grand old club. Architect Paul Takahashi kept the classic parkland character intact but introduced links-style elements with tight lies and crowns around engaging greens—among the region’s best—that have a wide range of slope and contour. Given the heaving Caledon landscape, uneven fairway lies are common and there are some challenging tee shots where moving the ball to fit the hole provides you with an advantage. Although not long at 6,415 yards, most holes let you grip it and rip it. The character of the clubhouse fits the rural setting. It sits atop the highest point on the property and invites you in for an after-round drink or for Sunday brunch. The large patio also beckons, offering scenic views of the lovely Caledon Hills. A secluded outdoor wedding area is perfect for that special day; its elevated location gives guests unparalleled panoramic views. A separate banquet area in the clubhouse accommodates up to 200 people. The combination of natural beauty and shot-making challenge provides Caledon Woods with the charm of a grand old club but everything you expect for 21st Century golf.
